Current Work

My work focuses on the general themes of health equity and organizational learning.  My content area interests include treatment of hypertensions and diabetes, and improvement of adherence with medical appointments and medications.  Currently, I am the leader of the SONNET network, whose activities are described on this site.  I also lead evaluation efforts for the Colorado Clinic-Community Integration (3CI) initiative, which is developing and evaluating interventions to identify and address basic resource needs among the members of Kaiser Permanente Colorado.

Outside KP, l am leading a randomized, controlled trial (funded by the American Heart Association) of an intervention using text messages and interactive voice response technology to improve adherence with visits and medications, as well as blood pressure control among hypertensive patients of the First Nations Community Healthsource, an Urban Indian Health Organization in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  I also lead the national resource center for a NIH (NIDDK)-funded Center for Diabetes Translational Research; both these projects are collaborations with long-time colleagues at the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. I am also the site Investigator for a NIH (NHLBI)-funded multi-site randomized controlled trial testing a “values” affirmation” intervention to improve treatment adherence among African-American patients in Kaiser Permanente Colorado and two other sites
